After Drama of St. Pete, Ende Looks for Trouble-Free run in Pirelli World Challenge race at Long Beach

Ende wants a better finish at home event after a forced engine change in Florida

April 16, 2013 (Los Angeles, Calif.) – The opening rounds of the 2012 Pirelli World Challenge in St. Petersburg, Florida ended up having an extra challenge for Duncan Ende, as the engine in his no. 24 STANDD / Merchant Services Audi R8 LMS gave up halfway through the opening round.

As a result, Ende would not finish the race and his GMG Racing crew would work through the night to change the engine so Ende could compete in the second round, which was the following morning. Starting last with a fresh Audi V10 engine installed in his car, Ende drove through the field to finish seventh, earning the Sunoco Hard Charger Invisible Glass Clean Pass of the Race Award.

“Thanks to the guys at GMG Racing and Audi Sport, we salvaged a good result at St. Pete,” said Ende. “And now we are focused on getting back on track at Long Beach, which should be a really good track for our Audi R8 LMS. As we saw in St. Pete, it may not be the fastest car over a single lap on a street circuit but it is really good on its tires and brakes and has plenty of speed left by the end of the race. Staying out of trouble and out of the fence in a tight street circuit like Long Beach is difficult in the opening laps but is obviously really important to getting a good finish.”

Having driven on the Long Beach circuit before in Champ Car Atlantics as well as the American Le Mans Series, Ende is familiar with the 11-turn, 1.968-mile circuit that runs along Shoreline Blvd. near downtown Long Beach.  Down the road from his home in Los Angeles, the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach is a home event not only for Ende, but for his GMG Racing team.

Also on hand will be members of STANDD (Stop Texting and Driving Distracted), who will be spreading the message of the dangers of distracted driving.

“Racing in front of friends and family is always exciting,” said Ende. “And this is also close to home for GMG and with many of their customers coming to the race, we want to put on a good show for them as well. We are also really happy that we will have Diveeta Thompson from STANDD with us at Long Beach to help her promote STANDD and educate the fans of World Challenge on the dangers of distracted driving.”

Ende will be very busy during the weekend, as he will also compete in Saturday’s American Le Mans Series race. He will partner with Bruno Junquiera in the no. 9 RSR Racing Oreca FLM09 in the LMPC class.

After two World Challenge GT races, Ende is tenth in the GT driver’s championship with 128 points.

The third round of the Pirelli World Challenge will be streamed live at at 4:00 PM PST on Sunday, April 21. The race will be broadcast on NBC Sports on Sunday, May 5 at 2:00 PM ET.
